Techies that Hide from Ministry

Techies that Hide from Ministry

Tech Leadership
What ministry in your church places the least amount of emphasis on spiritual development, small group time and personal accountability? It may very well be your technical media ministry.

The majority of churches that I've talked to seem to have a problem recruiting people who want to subject themselves to knobs, dials, lights and buttons - and the hot seat of performance or shame that seems to often come with it. Media ministries have a tendency to become the us-four-and-no-more club, as the demands for technical performance seem to limit the opportunity to plug in new volunteers. And perhaps most disturbing of all, there's a tendency that in nearly every media ministry - whether large or small - to allow people to serve without us serving them and including them outside of the "tech realm".

You know what this person looks like: they will be more than happy to punch buttons, roll up cable and work with tech, but they clam up when it comes to small group Bible opportunities or sharing praise and prayer requests in front of a group. In essence, they serve in the technical ministry because so little is required of them beyond the tech. They are techies that hide from ministry.

If your church tech team doesn't meet and pray together, have a short devotional and offer up praise and prayer requests as a group, I think you're potentially fostering a place where people will come and hide from true ministry. Make sure that you make time to meet the tech staff and volunteers before, between or after services to dive in God's Word, pray for each other and build up the team members.

It's not about the tech. It's about the people.

I attend and volunteer at Gateway Church in Southlake, TX and love it!

If I'm not at Gateway during a weekend, it's probably because I'm consulting with other churches across North America. I love what I do!

My consulting with churches is usually (but not always) based either on weekend trips, training staff & volunteers or on projects for technology design or upgrades. Most importantly, I love to equip, challenge and encourage the leaders and volunteers of the churches I'm privileged to work with.

It's not about the tech; it's about the people.
