Study: Nearly 1/2 of all churches in U.S. have no Website

Study: Nearly 1/2 of all churches in U.S. have no Website

01/10/06 | by Anthony D. Coppedge [mail] | Categories: Communications

A new study conducted by Ellison Research for Lifeway revealed some sad statistics about how churches are failing to leverage the power of the internet.

Some revealing facts from the study:

  • 25% of churches surveyed do not use the internet at all.
  • 47% of churches surveyed do not have a website.
  • Only 58% of churches surveyed have staff email.

"But we are a tiny church and can't afford a website."

Bull crap. That's the equivalent of saying - to this culture - "We can't afford to meet for church." What's the point? If you are going to be found by your community and you are going to at least appear relevant and in touch, having a website is on par with having a place to meet for corporate worship and teaching. This isn't true in some countries, but here in the U.S., it's a given.

I'll bet if you asked some local businesses near your church to help sponsor your website for one year, you could get $1,000 raised in 1 day flat. No banner ads, no hooks - just a tax-deductible write-off for businesses. It's just not that hard!

OK - time for you to add your 2 cents in here. Comment away!

I attend and volunteer at Gateway Church in Southlake, TX and love it!

If I'm not at Gateway during a weekend, it's probably because I'm consulting with other churches across North America. I love what I do!

My consulting with churches is usually (but not always) based either on weekend trips, training staff & volunteers or on projects for technology design or upgrades. Most importantly, I love to equip, challenge and encourage the leaders and volunteers of the churches I'm privileged to work with.

It's not about the tech; it's about the people.
