I've been talking with friends at churches affected by Katrina and now Rita in Texas and Louisiana. They're in a rebuilding mode and thinking about how they'll start over. Amidst all of the personal loss and grief, a "bright spot" in the conversation seems to happen when they each say "well, at least there's insurace money".
One guy recently remarked to me "now we'll have the money to hire you so it's done right this time." It got me to thinking that there really is a bright spot for churches in that they'll get all new stuff to replace what they had. This means new office supplies, furniture and even technology. In the conversations I had with several of these folks, they were looking forward to not making the same technology mistakes that they had either inherited or seen spent poorly the last time.
I'm so sorry that so much damage has to be overcome and that the loss and sadness of it all has happened. But my friends are right: at least there's insurance money to do it right this time!
